Old Memories – Extracts from Journals of the Realm

Chesapeake (PaxLair Times) – October 21, 2012 – by Ashlynn (With stories by Samara and Savaric) – I have gathered together copies of stories and journal entries from various folk across the realm. Recorded are tales of old encounters and experiences that others may enjoy reading.

From the Journal of Samara

Long ago, I had been venturing deeper and deeper into the East Britannian woods. I was a hunter, a tailor by craft, and I survived encounters with the most unsavory types. Life was simple and I had a savings account that could weather any storm.

At about this time, the Lost World was found by Britannian citizens and a friend of mine tried to convince me that I needed to get out and explore more; treasure and adventure could be in store for me. I nervously stepped through a blue gate, which might have been my second or third alone, and opened my eyes to a tribal village of grass huts and dirt streets. Delucia they called it; a small quaint village, with a raw natural appeal introduced me to the Lost World.

Delucia was largely populated by cows, hinds, bulls, and sheep. It was a tailor’s paradise. As soon as I was getting comfortable again, this same friend of mine decided I should check out the Lost World’s desert. It was here that I first encountered a foe I will never forget, even 10 years later, the Ophidians. The “fields” they called it, a giant opening in the desert surrounded by natural mountain barriers that mocked the appearance of a coliseum.

In my first encounter, I had to keep telling myself “Its just like in Britain. Except the snakes are big.. and.. they hold big axes.. and.. cast spells.” This confidence was paper thin and torn apart the first time I found myself in extreme pain and in need of immediate aid. All would fade to grey, and my hopes of becoming prosperous in this Lost World faded with it.

I dropped the life of a warrior completely. I stuck to Delucia and cowardly saved up for a trip home to Britain. I began mining and crudely repairing armor for travelers that came through. There was one knight who told me a tale of how he regularly fought dragons and daemons. He frequented the forge and no matter how badly beaten his armor, his spirit never wavered and he kept going back.

I decided then that I would no longer slave over the armor repairs of other adventurers. It was my turn, and it would mean giving up tailoring, and mining, and risking everything to learn new skills and purchase better equipment. My carefully collected savings, that safe trip home to Britannia, purchased me enough equipment to learn archery and taught me how to resist spells. I would face these Ophidians again, and this time I would have the upper hand.

Months later, I arrived at Delucia’s forge and set down several suits of my own expensive armor and weapons for the young smith before me. I knew this consignment would take him some time, but it would serve him well. It would give him enough time to realize that the adventurous spirit of this tribal Lost World, and Britannia in general, is beyond the safety of the guards.

Of Britain – By Savaric

(Editors note: This is an entry recorded before Savaric became the infamous undead Lich we all know and “love”)

“Britain!” I exclaimed!

I had heard so much about it. I was fresh off the boat from Haven and I could not take my eyes off of the splendid buildings that lay before me. It was a miracle, a God-send, this place full of people and life. My skills as a Ranger were at the apprentice stage, but I had already managed to make a very fair-haired equine my companion in this continent of promise.

I gave my steed an apple I had bought in Haven, and led it down the alleys to the finely made bank north of the docks. I deposited my non-essentials and mounted up. My bow and arrows were at the ready as I left the Western Gate Bridge. The Companions in Haven said I would need armor once I was off the sheltered island. I had studded sleeves of armor to protect my arms. They were a unique green color, a color that was to be useful in my profession. I would have to stalk the game of the area to earn my keep, leather and meat to sell to the provisioners in the town.

The cobblestone streets and massive structures turned to woodland. A hart dashed before me on the road! I fumbled with my bow and felt for an arrow. I loosed an arrow and it hit its mark! I felt like somebody for the first time in my life. The second arrow felled the animal. I had pulled my skinning knife from its sheath as I dismounted. My hands shook with excitement. I had succeeded! Leather and meat, I could not help but yell those words!

I went about the business of skinning and field butchering the animal when I heard a tremendous crash! I cried tears of sorrow. My horse had been crushed by a huge club and the laughter of an ogre filled the air. In a rage I slung an arrow into its leg. It was a mistake.  The club sent me flying and I landed on the road. Somehow I was not dead. The Virtues must have been with me. I picked myself up and started running. I was pursued. I ran until my stamina gave out. I saw a small bridge ahead, but something was blocking it. It was a leathery orb with a huge eye and stalks protruding from its body. There were eyes on them too! I had never seen such a thing! I was stunned by the sight, and then everything went black. I was out of my body. I could see myself lying there, as the ogre stripped me of what I possessed. I knew not what to do. I saw a heavily armed woman on a steed rip into the ogre with her sword. Blood spilled everywhere. I yelled at her in my ghostly state. She turned and smiled. She said “It will all be alright. No one is dead forever in Sosaria.”

PaxLair Bestiary – Wisp

Chesapeake (PaxLair Times) – October 20, 2012 – by Ashlynn – Being an orb of light hovering a few feet above the ground, these whimsical enchanting creatures move gracefully between trees and buildings. Of their motives and desires, little is known as their language has yet to be decyphered by even the learned scholars of the Lyceum.

Though mostly benign, one should be careful not to antagonize the creatures as they appear to possess some mastery of the arcane arts (some have speculated they are arcane energy incarnate) and will mercilessly punish those foolish enough to attack.

It is unknown what links they possess to their more sinister-looking kin, the Shadow Wisp, a seemingly more subservient creature that can be summoned by those learned in certain schools of magic or encountered within the Twisted Weald.

On Wisps – From the Journal of Ashlynn

Of all the wonders that inhabit the lands of Sosaria I find the wisps most enchanting. Their origins are a mystery to me and my attempts to communicate with them still prove as difficult today as they did so many seasons ago.

Long ago when the lands were new to me and the forests were an unknown and wild place, my curious nature took me exploring as it often did to the deepest groves and the farthest flung parts of the realm. Of course I have always been terrible at time keeping and before I knew it, the sun was sinking beneath the horizon shrouding the land in a gloomy autumn darkness.

With no bedroll in my pack (for I did not expect to be spending the night with crickets and fireflies) I was forced to make do with my cloak, a cloak I should add that seemed to possess the mystical property of staving off sleep. More than I expected when I made the purchase that much is certain. But it was as I lay there, more alert and awake than I had ever been during the day, that I saw a flicker of white light through the trees in the distance.

At first I thought it a trick of my mind or yet another of my cursed cloak’s effects but then I saw it again, the light appearing to move between the trees. As sleep was no longer an option, I gathered up my belongings and carefully made my way through the woods towards it.

I heard the strange creature before I saw it, like the chiming of a hundred tiny silver bells. It was made of light, a shining orb that hovered slowly above the ground. It didn’t seem to notice me and so I followed it some distance to where it joined others of it’s kind between a circle of tall white ivy covered pillars.

It is at this point that I should mention that not all decisions I made in my younger days were informed by great wisdom and experience for I decided for some reason to monitor the effects that a spell of mine might have if cast upon one of the beings. Where once it had ignored my presence, now it moved towards me with great speed hurling arcane energies at me as it did so. I attempted to run but barely managed to make it a few yards before everything went black.

When I awoke it was morning and I glanced up at a figure clad in a long brown robe. He chastised me for straying from the path of virtue but then wished me well. Of the creatures of light there was no sign and not wishing another similar encounter, at least not for a few days or so, I decided to rush back to the warm comforts of home.

Archery, Adventure, and Aquatic Beasts

Guardians Gate (When not at Sea), Trammel, Chesapeake (PaxLair Times) – October 15, 2012 – by Ashlynn – The weekend was not without it’s events and there were two of note the past few days – the first a hunt for a mightly Scalis creature, and the second an archery tournament hosted by the people of Guardian’s Gate.

A Hunt for Scalis

Though that should be “a scalis”. I have discovered (not too recently) that the name scalis refers to the species and not their individual names. This makes sense of course as we have killed several of them now and they apparently have their own names which are difficult to pronounce in the Britannian tongue.

Still we fought one this friday evening past and it was not an easy battle, the thing keeping us at bay for over an hour after we had lured it to the docks of New Magincia. Eventually I was able to trap the beast with my small ship (the Blossom Cutter, which just so happened to be docked nearby!) and reinforcements were called to aid us cut the creature down.

Eventually it fell to our spells and blades but of the mythical treasures the beast was said to carry, there was no sign.

A Test of Marksmanship

The fine people of Guardian’s Gate hosted an archery tournament this weekend at their now familiar arena not far from the Tap House. Having purchased some eminently accurate magic arrows from merchant in Occlo, and having my faery bow to hand, I felt lucky and decided to enter the competition myself.

The format was double elimination and there were twelve, or perhaps fourteen entrants (I think there were a few late arrivals). There was a prize on offer of 5 million gold for the winner and prizes for runners up.

Unfortunately it seemed as though the merchant had cheated me as my arrows only won me last place or near to it. But the results were as follows:

  • 1st Place – Fruit Loop
  • 2nd Place – Lyra Slaviana
  • 3rd Place – Jericho
  • 4th Place – Se’an Silverfoot
  • 5th Place – Andromaque

Highest score of the evening went to Garun Tahl with 570pts.

Congratulations to the winners!

The Coronation of King Blackthorn

Britain, Trammel, Chesapeake (PaxLair Times) – October 11, 2012 – by Ashlynn – Yesterday marked a historic moment in Sosarian history as a new monarch took his place upon Britannia’s throne following months of civil disorder, rebellion, and political squabbling amongst the nobility. His Royal Highness King Blackthorn was formally crowned at the recently rebuilt Castle Blackthorn before an enormous crowd of onlookers with Lord Dupre having the honour of leading the ceremony.

Issuing a grand speech to rival even Governor Winfield, the newly crowned King admitted that events had happened quickly but he promised to do all in his power to unite the Britannian people and return the realm to it’s former glory. The King also touched on recent events including the fall of Ver Lor Reg, the defeat of Exodus and the following Gargish plague.

As the king finished his speech the crowd cheered, many shouting “Long Live the King” and other words of support for our new ruler, though I did note a few others stood by in silence.

Once the ceremony was concluded and the people had finished their cheering, the King and Lord Dupre led the crowds via moongate to an obscure mountain valley where the realm’s finest carpenters had crafted fine – if somewhat gaudy – replicas of the King’s new throne for all to remember the occasion by.

A United Realm?

With a new King on the throne it is hoped we will finally see an end to the divisions amongst the Britannian people and the unrest that has followed as everyone unites behind our new ruler. But not everybody is convinced.

Already there are whispers behind closed doors and in the shadowy corners of the Kingdom’s taverns. A creature calling itself Blackthorn was an enemy of the realm once and some still wonder if this one is too. It is said that Blackthorn was not really the man Dupre and our old king knew, but we have already recently been witness to the chaos dopplegangers and doubles can cause. Is this Blackthorn just another?

Surely after the failure to seize Britannia through force of arms, a more subtle strategy would be the logical alternative. Some say Blackthorn’s appearance at a time when the Kingdom was most divided and the Gargish were plagued by a disease only he could cure was more than a little convenient.

Still others say we should judge people by their deeds and we should wait and see how the new King decides to rule. Lord Dupre appears to have faith in the man and it will certainly be interesting to watch how the King deals with any ongoing unrest.
